There’s something exciting happening in Port Huron.

Recently, MVCA’s Executive Director, Ara Topouzian had the opportunity to participate in Inventors & Investors, a first-time event organized by Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County and The Underground under the leadership of Kanchan Wankhede (Director of Business Services, EDA). The event brought together entrepreneurs, community leaders, innovators, and supporters who all share a common goal: helping new ideas grow into successful businesses.

What stood out most was the energy in the room.

Across Michigan, we often hear conversations centered around larger entrepreneurial hubs like Detroit, Ann Arbor, or Grand Rapids. But events like this serve as an important reminder that innovation is happening in communities of every size. Port Huron is steadily building a startup ecosystem fueled by passionate founders, engaged local leadership, and organizations committed to supporting entrepreneurship.

The event featured several startup pitches competing for prizes, giving entrepreneurs an opportunity to share their ideas, receive feedback, and gain exposure. These types of gatherings are incredibly valuable because they create connections — between founders, investors, mentors, and community champions — that can help move ideas forward.

The audience also appreciated hearing insights from Drew Mcusic, Venture Fellow and Michigan Venture Capital Association member from Union Heritage. Drew shared thoughtful perspectives on what investors often look for in early-stage innovators, helping founders better understand how to position their ideas, communicate market potential, and demonstrate long-term viability.

Building a startup community doesn’t happen overnight. It requires consistent collaboration, local champions, accessible resources, and spaces where entrepreneurs feel encouraged to test ideas and learn from one another. Events like Inventors & Investors are important because they help establish that foundation and signal that innovation is welcome here.

Michigan’s entrepreneurial ecosystem continues to expand because communities across the state are stepping forward to support innovators in meaningful ways. Port Huron is clearly becoming part of that conversation.
