We recently fielded a request from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Information Programs (IIP) in Washington, D.C.  IIP works with American Embassies abroad to coordinate speaking programs that connect U.S. experts with foreign audiences.

IIP is seeking a VC to participate in a speaking opportunity this November, and we’ve included details below.  If you’re interested in participating or have questions, please contact Amanda Batt at IIP, 202-632-9241 or [email protected]

U.S. Embassy Jerusalem Speaking Program

  • The worldwide economic recession, combined with the economic constraints tied to the Israeli-Palestinian political situation, has weighed heavily on the West Bank and Gaza in recent years.

  • There is little understanding of the impact of how the global economic situation and world events (coupled with domestic political and economic issues) can impact Palestinian economic prospects.

  • U.S. Embassy Jerusalem hopes to encourage interlocutors to focus on how economic problems can be solved creatively.  Post envisions an entertaining and engaging take on economic development with a speaker who is fluent in Arabic.

Timing.  November 18–21, 2013

Location.  The program will take place in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and with Gaza via video conference.

Format.  The day is a combination of outreach to university audiences, workshops with local NGO and possibly some government offices. Depending on the speaker, we can adapt our outreach. It would be great if he/she can advise of what format he/she usually uses, and the topics that he/she can lecture/train/have discussions on.

Audience.  The audience will be a Palestinian audience. Jerusalem will organize audiences from various university departments that study economics-related topics, economic NGOs, business associations, microfinance organizations, and youth groups.

The US Embassy is aiming to approach students, but might also arrange for a roundtable meeting/discussion with faculty and experts in the field.

Language.  The program will be conducted entirely in Arabic.
